Rob Noonan is in Australia chasing an obsession, the ghost of a memory that has entranced his family for a hundred years. Rob’s journey takes him from lotus eaters in East Coast pleasure domes to the rootless drifters in small town Australia, before hitting the long open roads of melted tarmac through the Never Never, where a vigilante stalks the baked clay of an isolated cattle station.
This is The Red Centre, where legends and myths grow far from the rule of law, warped by the unforgiving southern sun. Rob will be taken to the edge of his endurance and finds that his salvation comes with devastating consequences.

I received a free copy of this book pre-publication for beta reading. What a brilliant book this is, I really enjoyed it! Rob, the narrator has wanted to come to Australia for a long time. He has a letter and a photo of a runaway uncle on the other side of the world and his yearning for Oz is born from this. The book intrigued me right away as to why great uncle ran away. It has good similes, good hooks and keeps the reader guessing. It's also powerful and really gets your emotions going. It's very well-observed with good atmospheric detail. All really good scene-setting; it's hard to imagine this author is in his 30's, it's very mature writing, refreshing and well thought-out. All this created a perfect picture in my mind and made me want to read on. I liked how he mentioned which music was playing as they were on the beach-I did listen to this 'Travelers' sung by Dezarie to get the idea. I always like musical references included in books/knowing which music the characters are listening to. This book seems to have all the elements that I look for in a good book. I learned something: how the Doors got their name-I didn't already know this. This young author seems to know about a lot of stuff and seems very well-read. He has some great vocabulary and shows a wealth of knowledge, I was very impressed. I like the accent coming through the writing eg Macca's accent. The author has put so much into this book. I love travel memoirs and this reads like one of these but is fiction. I've never been to Australia, and, as places were mentioned, I looked them up and read the details-also there are details in the book-it's a real travel experience in book form and I really enjoyed this. The character has his journal with him-I have come to realise that the author has probably made a trip such as this-the knowledge which is apparent through the writing-he must have been drawing on some of his own experiences. This book is about a trip, a trip that many would love to make-to Australia-backpacking I guess, seeing the sights-but it's also so much more: Trying to find out the truth behind this relative and behind some sort of trouble. There's excellent action, adventure and emotional calls back home. Then we learn about trips; seeing dolphins, snorkelling, there's some beautiful writing about the various colourful creatures they see and great detailed descriptions of the area. I enjoyed the suspense with wondering if he would find out what happened to Great Uncle Giles and what the scandal had been. What a brilliant book! It had all the right ingredients for me: travel, adventure, intrigue, relationships, emotions, a cracking read.Product details
